Baking & Pastry Club
|
Club Leader: Julie Swift
Schedule: 6 week session 5th and 6th Graders Mondays 3-4:30 7th and 8th Graders Thursdays 3-4:30 |
Julie Swift remembers the first cake she baked. It was a mix from Jiffy. She also remembers the second cake she made. It was a from scratch chocolate cake that weighed about 10 lbs. Her family thought it was so funny they tried to cut it with a saw. But the moral of the story is there is as much to learn from baking failures as there is from the successes. Because Julie, a former professional pâtissière (pastry chef) will be guiding aspiring chefs in 5th- 8th in the art of delicious desserts. Students will learn the science of doughs. They'll tackle complicated concoctions like cakes genoise, meringue, truffles, cheesecakes and panne cotta. They'll even pick up French terminology along the way. And they are sure to impress at the Fall Showcase with something delicious.
Drama Club
|
Club Leader: Cynthia De La Fuente
Schedule: Tuesdays and Wednesdays 3-4:30 |
The experience of last year's club is something Cynthia de la Fuente will not soon forget. We discovered talent beyond what any of us had imagined... and we know there are more of you out there! This year we will have the luxury of starting at the beginning of the year to develop skills. We will play fun games that teach us how to be heard, how to express emotions, and how to focus on details. We will develop characters and monologues; sing solos and duets: only if you want to sing :) We will put on multiple shows!! SO... if your life is full of drama, if you have a story to tell, if you just know that there is something in you that needs to be expressed and you think the stage is calling you, then you need to be in drama club!
Knitting Club
|
Club Leader: Lee Stein
Schedule: Tuesdays 3-4 |
Lee Stein loves the endless variety of textures that knitting creates, as well as the sound of knitting needles clicking. For her, looking at yarn is like a teenager's love of shopping or a 40-something music fan exploring stacks of vinyl records. Knitting is a calming, therapeutic exercise, and allows one to socialize with friends and meet other knitters. Learn from each other and get inspired by each other's works. You'll start with the basics, learning a new stitch or two each week. Learn how to read a pattern. Make a scarf, then a hat and so on. Materials: Please bring a ball of worsted weight yarn and a set of straight US#9 needles. These can be purchased at Joann for minimal cost.
Garden Club

Gardens never turn out exactly how they are envisioned, and being able to adapt to that is what makes gardening fun! Rebecca Gitles Deutsch and Eileen Ryan love media. But know what they love more? Getting Blaine students involved in media production! Blaine media superstars are born when they write and produce the weekly Blue Jay Morning Tweet. They gain in-depth knowledge of different facets of media by learning directly from professionals, such as TV producers, radio announcers, actors, advertising executives, copywriters, photographers, production managers and more. And media club participants produce their own works that are seen by the entire Blaine community... and beyond. Check out what made media club cool in 2012-13. And then be part of it in 2013-14.

poetry & movement club
Pilar Audain Reed's fusion of expressive movement and spoken word was birthed during her Junior year of high school when she placed an oratory/dramatics national competition. This art form stayed with her all through college where she danced with the band Vibe N’Verse, founded by Reggie Gipson, a writer for the movie Love Jones! Pilar now teaches for Joffrey Ballet and shares her love of spoken word in Chicago venues. Last spring, Blaine's own “Words in Color” competed in Chi-town’s Kuumba Lynx city-wide Poetry Competition and won an award for “Best Female Flow.” This year, explore the concepts of Peace, Love & Hope through words & motion! In plain English? Dance & poetry unite! BOTH BOYS & GIRLS WELCOME!
HIP HOP DANCE CLUBBorn in the late 1980's, a cultural dance style and form that is often performed to Hip-Hop music. This dance form was often practiced in an informal setting as a rebellion to mainstream dance styles and other cultural differences. Hip-Hop often has variations of break dancing, popping and locking and animation. Students in grades 5th through 8th will have an opportunity to learn this dance style from one of Chicago's most talented dancers, Damon Green. Damon is a classically-trained dance professional who has performed internationally. Timeout Chicago rated him one of the "Top 10 Men of Dance" in 2010!

art club
Maria Guasso has traveled throughout the Americas and Europe, finding inspiration throughout the world that heavily influenced her both as an artist and a teacher. In art club, students will explore the art styles and techniques of different cultures. Painting, block printing and photo transfers are just a few of the cool techniques and media we will be working with. Art Club will also be doing a mural for Blaine's Cafeteria Revitalization Project. In this effort, students as artists will be creating a permanent installation for generations of Blaine students to enjoy for years to come.
Carlos Gonzalez is a self-proclaimed technogeek and netizen of the computer world. In this club, you will learn the basics of programming and make computers do awesome things. Imagine creating something out of nothing. Yes, that's what coding helps you do! The club will also talk about and explore mobile devices, the Internet, latest trends in technology and who knows what else. Welcome to technogeekdom, where only the cool rule.
